welcome

The extent and nature of the disabilities faced by people we support varies enormously. While some people have an intellectual disability, other people we support also have physical disabilities such as blindness, deafness, immobility, or communication difficulties.

As Spectrum Care tends to support people who require higher levels of assistance in the community, the disability is often more than an intellect that has not fully developed, though this is a common characteristic. Our mission is to create the opportunity for the best quality of life and choice for people with an intellectual disability so that they can ultimately live a great life.

NZ Disability Charter

On the 30th of April 2001 the Prime Minister Helen Clark and the Minister for Disability Issues at that time, Lianne Dalziel launched the New Zealand Disability Strategy. This first of its kind document is now a major focus for the entire disability sector and has been fully embraced by Spectrum Care.

At present one in five New Zealanders live with a long-term disability. The aim of the strategy is to remove the barriers, which prevent people with a disability from participating fully in society. There are fifteen objectives covering a range of areas including human rights, public services and support systems.

At Spectrum Care our vision to support people with an intellectual disability to live a great life is aligned with the aims of the Disability Strategy, and so we are committed to increasing the range of choices and opportunities available to people with a disability.
